Fingerprint Readers - An Affordable Security System

Here’s one option for a low-cost security system:

a pair of used, size 13 work boots for men - 5 dollars - Goodwill.
a grimy copy of "Guns and Ammo" magazine - 0.50 cents - Used bookstore.
an extra large dog dish, well chewed - 4.95 dollars - The Dollar Store.
one sheet of lined, schoolbook notepaper - 0.01 cent - Any discount retailer.
Total outlay: 10.46 dollars
Written on the note: "Bubba, Big Mike and me’ve gone to get more ammunition – be back real soon. Don't disturb the pit bulls, they just done been wormed. Later, Joe Bob.”
---
That system might work well on a TV sitcom set in the rural south, but urban residents need something a little more reliable. That’s because urban security entails more than simply keeping thieves from breaking through a mechanical lock. It involves observation, identification, and access control, since both at home and in business, most of us have things (personal items or products for sale) or information (personal records, financial information, etc.) that we don’t want others to be able to access.

Trekkies, rejoice! The rest of us, beware!

Biometric scanners are on the way.

London’s Heathrow Airport is one of the first in the world to use a total-body scanner for security, but it probably won’t be long before they’re familiar sites in US airports as well. Using a technological advance called Millimeter Wave, these scanners give airport security personnel a full 3-D view of you from the skin out. The idea is to discover hidden weapons and contraband without pat-downs, metal-detecting wands, X-rays, or strip-searches. Theoretically, the new technology should please privacy advocates and others who have complained about having to remove shoes, belts, and other clothes at US airports.

Imagine: Total Home Control

by Andrew Reed For Vertex Security & Technology

Remember when home automation meant having a living room light turn on at 6:00 every evening? Even with that light, those days seem like the dark ages!

Now imagine having auto-control over every system and appliance in your home, distributing data, voice (VoIP), and audio and video throughout the house, turning appliances on and off automatically, monitoring the children (and their nanny), and accessing the information you need from a central point.

A dream??? No. It’s time to turn your imagination into reality!

Though most of the technology has been around for decades, recent advances in system integration and interconnectivity are renewing interest in automated or remote control. Systems you can control include: lighting, appliances, heating and cooling, security and monitoring systems, home audio and video, telephones and intercoms, and even lawn sprinklers.

It used to be that all systems had to be wired into a home's electric infrastructure, an expensive and lengthy process that often required re-wiring the entire house. Most systems also used (and many still do!) a single data protocol like x10 or zwave, compatible only with itself. But the next generation of home automation products can provide an all-in-one solution for easily controlling your entire home – and they don’t require an expert technician every time you want to add a new appliance or reprogram your A/V system. They’re cheap, simple, and user-friendly, and best of all, they’re available right off the shelf!
