Trekkies, rejoice! The rest of us, beware!

Biometric scanners are on the way.

London’s Heathrow Airport is one of the first in the world to use a total-body scanner for security, but it probably won’t be long before they’re familiar sites in US airports as well. Using a technological advance called Millimeter Wave, these scanners give airport security personnel a full 3-D view of you from the skin out. The idea is to discover hidden weapons and contraband without pat-downs, metal-detecting wands, X-rays, or strip-searches. Theoretically, the new technology should please privacy advocates and others who have complained about having to remove shoes, belts, and other clothes at US airports.
