One of my favorite applications is in libraries. Instead of the traditional librarian checking out a book – older readers will remember the card slipped into a pocket inside the cover, on which you could read previous borrowers’ names hand-written along with the check-out and return dates – or the bar-code system that replaced the cards a generation ago, RFID technology allows libraries to lend and return books and other media automatically. The authorized borrower – anyone with a library card – can take a book, video, or CD and check it out without taking the librarian’s time (or your own, which in my youth was wasted standing on line every Saturday morning waiting to return last week’s book and check out this week’s choice). When you return it, it’s automatically checked back in.

RFID is Radio Frequency Identification. It uses microprocessors to create electronic ID tags and short-wave radio signals to transmit the information to a reader and thence to a control system. Some applications have been in use for years, others have been targeted to industries quite recently, and still others are in development – or in the minds of engineers, designers, marketers, and corporate leaders.

Most pet owners are familiar with RFID in a vague way. Many veterinarians routinely implant RFID chips in dogs and cats when they vaccinate and neuter or spay them. Those chips are typically encoded with the animal’s name, sex, date of birth, and vaccination records and the owner’s name and contact information. The implants are useful for only two purposes – to check or confirm immunization records and to identify a pet that has been lost, found by a stranger, and taken to a vet or shelter and, it’s hoped, enable its return.

Back in January we reported on the use of biometric scanners at Heathrow and other international airports. Now two more biometric applications that will impact international travelers are coming down the pike, both from Precise Biometrics, a Swedish company with subsidiaries in the US and UK. So if you’re planning a trip overseas, get ready for the next wave in high-tech travel.

The first new system is in response to the American Civil Aviation Administration’s requirement that airlines operating at US airports guarantee that when someone checks in luggage for a flight the same person actually boards the plane. This new requirement is part of the Homeland Security Department’s strategy for improving identity tracking and hence security at airports throughout the country.

Going Overboard with Surveillance Cameras

Some places are more security conscious than others. Some are just luckier – or perhaps they know how to play the angles.

Dillingham, Alaska, a no-stoplight town with a population of 2,400, received a grant of 2,000 from the Homeland Security Department to install 80 surveillance cameras at the local port and elsewhere around the town, including the Fire Department and City Hall. That works out to a camera for every 30 residents. When citizens complained about procedural issues that led to the grant, the mayor resigned in a huff.

Segway Transportation: The Way of the Future?

For those of you who have been out of the loop, one of the coolest recent developments in electronics is the Segway Human Transporter (HT). Manufactured by the Segway Corporation (www.segway.com), the self-balancing scooter is fast becoming a popular toy for big boys of all stripes, from police and private security guards to commuters to tourists.

The Segway, whose name is derived from “segue,” meaning a transition in music, is truly a transitional mode of transportation between pedestrian power and a motor vehicle. It’s engineered to be self-balancing and self-motivated: you lean a little forward and it moves forward, straighten up and it stops. No brakes needed, and you steer it with handlebars.

Z-WaveTM – the Next Standard?

In March we wrote about X-10 as an affordable protocol for controlling home control systems. This month we have some updates to report on the Z-Wave™ protocol manufactured by Zensys (www.zen-sys.com).
Zensys describes Z-Wave technology as “an RF based, two-way, mesh network, communications protocol that enables everyday devices to be controlled and monitored wirelessly.” And indeed it is. It’s become popular enough that at least 125 manufacturers have joined the Z-Wave Alliance (www.z-wavealliance.com) and are developing or redesigning products to support the protocol.
Superna Corporation, manufacturers of the Superna Home Control Systems featured on this site, is one of the newest members of the Alliance, and it expects its Smart Home Automation Systems to support Z-Wave in a matter of months. Intel Capital also has made a strategic investment in Zensys and in Z-Wave Alliance member iControl in Palo Alto, CA, which has developed a software and services platform designed to make remote monitoring more affordable and accessible for both homes and businesses.

Office Security

Security, as we’ve suggested before, can mean many things, and different measures bring a feeling of security to different people. But the core of security is controlling access – to oneself (and by extension family or coworkers); to personal information; to portable property, or a physical location, or even, as in the case of stalkers, to proximity.

Monitoring is a fundamental component of every method of access control. You have to know who’s there to determine whether or not to allow access. Peepholes in apartment doors, doormen or intercom systems, corporate security guards at gated facilities, and video cameras all serve the same purpose: monitoring to determine identity to permit or deny access.

Here’s Looking At You!

We wrote in January about various biometric scanning systems and fingerprint scanners. At the time we also mentioned retina scanners as one of the systems with potential for wider use in the future.

But it seems that interest in developing retina scanners for the retail market is diminishing. There are two reasons for this: invasiveness and inefficiency.

Retina scanners work by shooting laser light at your eyeball to scan the blood vessels embedded deep within. The veins make a pattern that is as unique to each person as a fingerprint, so they’re hard, if not impossible, to duplicate. Once the authorized person has had his or her eyeballs scanned into the system, retina scanners give very few false negative readings (rejecting an approved user) or false positives (admitting an unapproved one).

What Is Security?

Anyone who has ever lived in a small town or “in the country” has probably known people who never lock their doors. City residents, on the other hand, are highly security-conscious, double- or triple-locking doors, installing window gates, relying on doormen or intercom systems and peepholes to identify visitors or strangers who appear on their doorsteps. And more and more over the past 40 years, suburbanites and even residents of high-security, upscale gated communities have tended to follow city residents’ habits rather than the old ways of their “country cousins.”

There are good reasons for both the difference in people’s understanding of “security” and the gradual adoption of more stringent measures for maintaining a sense of safety.

x-10 Technology – The Low-key Protocol

Last December we described the Superna Home Automation system in the context of its convenience and ease of operation for homeowners and apartment dwellers. Now, for those who are neither techno-geeks or -phobes, but just interested and curious potential customers, here’s a somewhat closer look at the x10 protocol that’s one of the industry standards for operating automated systems.

x10 is a communications protocol. Unlike familiar protocols like TCP/IP that are used in sophisticated computer communications, however, x10 uses only one-tenth of one percent – 1/1000 – of the bandwidth needed for a dial-up connection. The system simply piggy-backs on the 60 mHz power of standard home wiring by sending a 120 mHz signal along the same electric lines. That limitation is also a benefit: x10 commands are slow, low-power, and very simple: “turn the radio off,” for example.

The Jetsons Are Coming, The Jetsons Are Coming!

George Jetson used to step into his cylindrical closet each morning and, a few seconds later, step back out in different clothes, as the closet – with Star Trek-style sliding pocket doors – automatically dressed him. His wife Jane talked to their refrigerator, and moments later hot food slid out of a slot in the counter. And, of course, they drove a flying car, which automatically navigated George to work each day – shades of Tom-Tom!

(If you’re too young to remember the Jetsons, they were a cartoon family from the 1960s, created as a futuristic counterpart to the stone-age Flintstones. You can probably catch the show from time to time on The Cartoon Network. The theme song went something like, “Meet George Jetson, Jane, his wife, his daughter, Judy, his boy, Elroy . . .” and they had a white dog that was remarkably like Sony’s recently deceased Aibo robo-pet.)

We haven’t quite reached the point of living like the Jetsons, but we’re getting there, step by step. Recent articles have described business executives who are so wired, in both senses of the word, that they push a button to transform the bathroom mirror into an online monitor from which they can check their stock prices as they shave or do make up.

Nanny Cams have, undeniably, a positive impact on the safety of children under the supervision of hired caregivers. And as any review of articles and news reports will show, nanny cams fulfill another important role besides the very real benefit of protecting small children: protecting parents’ peace of mind. Parental comfort level at leaving young children with a professional nanny or even a casual babysitter increases dramatically when they know the caregiver’s behavior is being monitored.

Some professional childcare services are beginning to install nanny cams. According to the web site of Tutor Time, a franchise childcare outlet, “classrooms are equipped with observation windows and security cameras.” (www.tutortime.com)For childcare businesses like Tutor Time, the motivation for using surveillance cameras is probably mixed. Having the cameras in use is a great selling point for customer comfort, and they serve the twofold purpose of watching over the children while also protecting the company. For, just as a nanny cam can help prove misbehavior by hired help in the home, a videotape can be a powerful defense against unjust accusations of abuse leveled at professional providers.

That system might work well on a TV sitcom set in the rural south, but urban residents need something a little more reliable. That’s because urban security entails more than simply keeping thieves from breaking through a mechanical lock. It involves observation, identification, and access control, since both at home and in business, most of us have things (personal items or products for sale) or information (personal records, financial information, etc.) that we don’t want others to be able to access.

Biometric scanners are on the way.

London’s Heathrow Airport is one of the first in the world to use a total-body scanner for security, but it probably won’t be long before they’re familiar sites in US airports as well. Using a technological advance called Millimeter Wave, these scanners give airport security personnel a full 3-D view of you from the skin out. The idea is to discover hidden weapons and contraband without pat-downs, metal-detecting wands, X-rays, or strip-searches. Theoretically, the new technology should please privacy advocates and others who have complained about having to remove shoes, belts, and other clothes at US airports.
